Book #24

Well I may not be able to do yoga everyday for 365 days, I did not practice yesterday and I have not practiced today, but I am going to read 52 books in 52 weeks by the end of this year.  I finished my 24th book this evening, What Diantha Did by Charlotte Perkins-Gillman.  I listened to it via www.librivox.org .  I enjoyed the reader very much.  This book should be required reading.  It is one of the best femist books I have read.  What Diantha Did was written in 1910 and all working women are still Dianthas and more than a few husbands still hold Ross’s beliefs.  I just don’t understand how we went from women not working and having cooks and servants to clean that house and do the laundry to women having careers and having to keep house as well.  Where did the disconnect happen?  Maybe I will research that one day.  I just know that I think a business like Diantha’s would do great today.  I will say no more, you must read or listen to the book to find out what I mean.

Peace,

Laura

Happy Salmon Kitty

Happy Cat

I have made it through day 4 of my 365 Yoga Practice challenge.  Yea!.  This is a picture of one happy kitty.  I cooked some salmon tonight from a recipe I have never used before and I used frozen salmon because it is hard to get fresh at our grocery.  I have never used frozen, I have only ever cooked salmon when I could get fresh.  It was nasty.  That is the only way my husband and I can describe it.  But, as you can see the cat loved it.  I am not sure how much he has had, we just gave him a little and then I think my husband gave him a little more, but he sure looked pleased when we returned from finding edible food for ourselves.  I had to take this picture and share.

Yoga Day 3- Yoga and Payer

I did it, 3 days in a row of practice and I feel like I am going deeper each practice.  Tonight as I lay in Shavasana, I thought about the connection I have made between yoga and prayer.  I know there are some Christians who view yoga as mystical and some how bad, evil.  I don’t.  I am a God-fearing believer but I respect the right for each individual to follow whatever spiritual path seems right to them.  My way may not be your way and your way might not be mine.  We all need to find our own road, mine just happens to be with Jesus.  I have always felt more spiritual when I am practicing on a regular basis.  I always end my practice with a prayer to God.  I pray for healing for myself and others that I know are in need and I give thanks for all things wonderful in my life.  I just think that spirituality and yoga go together and I guess they always have.

Namaste,

Laura

Have I read 52 books this year

Instead of joining one of the 52 books in 52 weeks groups, I decided that I would just start listing the books that I have read/listened to this year and see what it adds up to so far.  So here I go:

  1. The Help
  2. Herland
  3. Mennonite In a Little Black Dress
  4. The Key Lime Pie Murder
  5. Bless Me, Ultima
  6. The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano…the African
  7. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave
  8. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
  9. Song of Solomon
  10. Black Elk Speaks
  11. Love Medicine
  12. Woman Hollering Creek
  13. The Best Little Boy in the World
  14. Brave New World
  15. Strawberry Shortcake Murder
  16. Cherry Cheesecake Murder
  17. Dead Until Dark
  18. Rework
  19. Hidden Empire
  20. Dracula
  21. Dracula the Un-Dead
  22. Kindred
  23. Casting Spells

Ok, that is less than I thought.  I have spent too much time listening to podcasts instead of literature.  If you notice all of the minority books, I took a graduate seminar in American Minority Literature.  If you have a chance to take a similar course, I recommend it.  Although I have given up on my hopes of a Masters in Literature at this time, I still want to read and listen to the good stuff.  If you don’t know about it already, you need to check out www.librivox.org to download classics read by volunteers and they are all free.  It is like endless free enjoyment.  Well from the looks of this list, I need to stop blogging and start reading.

Peace,

Laura

.Day 2

I did it.  I have now practiced yoga 2 days in a row.  Only 363 left to go and I can do it.  I did the 3rd full body practice from Richard Hittleman’s 28 Days to Practice Yoga.  It has a sequence that is very intense on the abs.  Lord knows I need all the ab work I can get.

I am still eating way too many sweets and I am a total addict.  I am going to start working on this.

New knitting project.  It is a scarf of my own design.  When I am finished and have worked out all of the kinks I will have the pattern in my Etsy shop.  www.hippieista.etsy.com  This is worked with the new Debbie Stoller Bamboo Ewe and the color comes through as true in this picture.

Namaste,

Laura

365 Days of Yoga

I know, I know, not another person doing a 365 project.  Julie of Julie and Julia really started something, but, yes, I too am jumping on the band wagon.  I began today.  I feel horrible.  My body hurts every time I move, practically and I am fat, so, I am going to give this a try.  It can’t hurt and it might just help.  I have practiced off and on for over 15 years now and I always, always feel better when I have finished a practice.  I just can’t seem to stick with it.  Today I did the second day of Richard Hittleman’s 28-Day Yoga Practice book.  When I say day 2 I mean of the three total body practices at the end of the book that you are supposed to rotate through each third day, I did the second one.  Tomorrow I will do the third day and then the first and so on.  You may ask, why did you start with day two?  Yesterday I decided to do some major cleaning in my bedroom and my hamstrings are killing me today and the second day practice has some great poses for the hamstrings, so, I started there.  I am going to watch my eating, too, but for now I am going to focus on my Yoga Practice.  I hope that I have dropped some inches before I get to meet yoga teacher and life style entrepreneur and author, Kimberly Wilson.  She is going to be in my town in August doing book signings for her newest book Tranquilista.  If you have not done so already you should pick up a copy.  Also listen to her podcast, Tranquility de jour, you can find it on Itunes.

Namaste,

Laura

Kindle Cover

I actually sewed an item on the sewing machine!

It is a Cover for my Kindle

The colors are black, greens and pinks.  I made a pattern from my Kindle and then just kind of made it up as I went along.  I found the buttons for the closure at my local quilt shop.  It is padded with a stiff padding (I don’t know what it is called) that is used in making purses and messenger bags.  I took me about 2 hours and I think I would make some minor tweaks if I make it again, but I love it and it was a fun project.

Peace,

Laura
